12th March 2016 - Points defeat v Terry Flanagan

'Dirty' Derry Mathews has thrown himself into the World Title mix at Lightweight after a somewhat gruelling career spanning 13 years.

He's done it the hard way, often being the 'away' fighter causing an upset.

Going the more traditional route of collecting the English, Commonwealth and British Titles, Derry now finds himself fighting for World honours on the biggest of stages.

Defeat to Stephen Ormond left the popular Scouser's career in tatters but after knuckling down has put together four impressive victories back to back to propel his World title aspirations.

Derry Mathews won the vacant WBA Continental Lightweight title in a UD victory against Kent fighter Adam Dingsdale on the Liverpool Echo bill on Saturday October 25.

Mathews then added the interim WBA World Lightweight title with a confident unanimous decision win over Tony Luis, but vacated the belt for a shot at WBO World Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan in March 2016.

It wasn't to be a fairytale for Derry - Losing on points in his 50th fight in his home city for a World title. Mathews hinted post-fight he may retire but it remains to be seen if the likeable 32 year old will continue.
