Mexico's finest? Canelo Alvarez

Saul Canelo Alvarez started professional boxing at the tender age of 15, after being unable to find opponents at junior level, and has grown to become one of boxing's pound for pound best with a remarkable 45-1-1 record.

Alvarez grew up on a farm with seven older brothers, some of whom also practice the sweet science. His climb to greatness is a story of grit, determination and courage.

Notable victories for Canelo Alvarez include a unanimous decision win over Shane Mosley in 2012, a knockout against Josesito Lopez later that year and a TKO win by Alvarez over knockout artist Alfredo Angulo (below) last year.

Mayweather v Alvarez

After defending the WBC World Light-Middleweight World title for over two years and picking the WBA World Light-Middleweight title, an unbeaten Alvarez faced Floyd Mayweather in 2013 for what was one of the most profitable boxing events of all time.

Canelo struggled against the imperious Mayweather and lost his unbeaten record, but he has bounced back to take a stunning split decision win over Erislandy Lara and overcome tough fellow Mexican Alfredo Angulo.

Alvarez demolished power puncher James Kirkland at the iconic Minute Maid Park in Texas in May 2015 with a third round KO.

Cotto v Canelo

Canelo came out on top and scored a victory for Mexico against old boxing rivals Puerto Rico, with a UD points victory over Miguel Cotto.

There was controversy in the build up with Cotto being stripped of his WBC World Title, meaning the belt was only on the line for the flame haired boxer-puncher.

The fight itself lived up to pre-fight expectations as both men laid it all on the line in front of the sold out Mandalay Bay and the millions watching around the World on November 21.

Despite the wide scorecards, Canelo was a worthy winner and collected the WBC and Lineal Middleweight Titles in the process.
